MCCF Announces Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

MARSHALL COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES
LILLY ENDOWMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Plymouth, IN – One Marshall County student has been named recipient of a four-year, full tuition scholarship as the Marshall County Community Foundation (MCCF) 2014 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Mr. Cole Jacobson will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Mr. Cole Jacobson is the son of Tod and Theresa Jacobson of Plymouth, IN. He attends John Glenn High School. In addition to receiving several state and national awards for exceptional academic performance, Cole's many community activities include hours of teaching and mentoring local youth, raising money for nonprofits such as Relay for Life and CROP Walk for Hunger, and spending time visiting with seniors at a local nursing home. Cole also demonstrated leadership through his involvement with National Honor Society and Student Council. He attended Hoosier Boy's State at Trine University, the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Seminar at Butler University, and the Purdue Entrepreneur Academy. Cole was champion in his wrestling weight class and involved in the choir program, school variety shows, and musical and theatre presentations. Cole is planning to attend the University of Notre Dame and will major in Actuarial Science

 

The MCCF 2014 Lilly Scholarship Selection Committee, consisting of Beth Styers, Chair, Dr. Don Balka, Carolyn Kline, Connie Lemler, John Small Jr., Jared Weidner, Barbara Winters and Ron Zeltwanger, reviewed 19 applications and interviewed 3 applicants. Selection criteria include academic performance, community service, and leadership. Each candidate submits an essay and must be available for an interview if requested. The MCCF Lilly Scholarship Selection Committee's recommendations for one finalist and two alternates were approved by the Marshall County Community Board of Directors and then submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the selection of recipients.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment Initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 143 scholarships awarded statewide this year.

The mission of the Marshall County Community Foundation is to serve all of Marshall County, its people and its future through growth and administration of endowment funding and philanthropy.
